Engineering for Large-Scale Sheds & Workshop Buildings

Large industrial buildings need structural systems capable of creating substantial usable space while accommodating the loads, access and operational requirements of the facility.

Engineering On Demand provides structural engineering for Industrial Sheds Perth, including large-scale warehouses, workshops, manufacturing facilities, storage buildings and purpose-designed industrial structures throughout Western Australia.

From the primary steel frame and bracing through to connections, foundations and engineering documentation, we develop practical structural solutions around the size, use and construction requirements of each building.

Engineering Buildings Beyond the Standard Shed

As industrial buildings become larger, their structural requirements become more demanding.

Greater spans, increased wall heights, large door openings and extensive roof areas can significantly influence the forces acting through the building.

Large Scale Sheds may also need to accommodate heavy equipment, vehicle access, suspended services, mezzanines or other operational requirements that need to be considered as part of the structural design.

Engineering On Demand develops the structural framing around these project requirements rather than treating the building as a generic shed.

INDUSTRIAL SHED ENGINEERING.

What Needs to Be Engineered?

For this section, use your standard orange-heading technical layout rather than card

Primary Steel Framing.

Portal frames, columns, rafters and other primary members form the main structural system supporting the industrial building.

Secondary Steelwork.

Purlins, girts and associated framing transfer loads from the roof and wall systems back into the primary structure.

Bracing & Stability.

Roof and wall bracing provide stability and transfer lateral forces through the building.

Structural Connections.

Bolted and welded connections need to transfer forces between the individual components of the structural frame.

Base Plates & Anchors.

Column reactions are transferred through engineered base plates and anchors into the supporting foundations.

Footings & Foundations.

The foundation system needs to resist the structural reactions generated by the building while responding appropriately to the site conditions.

GANTRY CRANES & WORKSHOP STRUCTURES.

Designing the Building Around the Crane

Where a workshop will contain an overhead crane, the crane loads should ideally be considered as part of the building design from the beginning.

Crane runway beams and supporting columns can introduce substantial vertical and lateral loads into the structure.

Engineering On Demand can coordinate the crane support system with the wider workshop structure so that the frames, bracing and foundations work together.

INDUSTRIAL BUILDING APPROVALS.

Engineering Documentation for Construction

Large industrial sheds and workshops generally require structural documentation as part of the applicable building approval process.

The NCC classifies factories and buildings used for production, processing, repair or similar activities as Class 8 buildings, while warehouses and buildings used primarily for storage can fall within Class 7b.

Engineering On Demand can provide the structural engineering documentation and, where included within our scope, assist with the broader building approval process.

Frequently Asked Questions.

Yes. We can provide structural engineering for large sheds, warehouses, workshops and other industrial buildings throughout Perth and Western Australia.

There isn’t one standard maximum span. The practical span depends on the structural system, building geometry, loads, clearances and project requirements.

Yes. Crane loads can be incorporated into the structural design of a new workshop, including the supporting columns, runway system and foundations.

Yes. Foundation engineering can form part of the overall structural design using the building reactions and relevant site information.

Yes. Existing buildings can be assessed and structural engineering developed for extensions and modifications where sufficient information can be established.
